Co-Stabilizers

Akdeniz Chemson produces special chemicals that add specific properties to PVC.

Akdeniz Chemson produces special chemicals that add specific properties to PVC. Typical products belonging to the co-stabilizers group are beta diketones (AKSTAB) and hydrotalcites (AS series).

Betadiketones

Akstab® ORL (Steroylbenzoylmethane, SBM)

ORL is a co-stabilizer for PVC stabilizers, especially in calcium/zinc-based or similar systems. It develops initial colour and colour stability without negatively affecting performance by absorbing or stabilizing the HCI that forms during the heating process. It is suitable for all rigid, semi-rigid and plasticized PVC applications.

Its recommended level of use depends on the formulation, processing conditions and the product type.

ORL-P is a high purity SBM. It is recommended for extrusion, finishing and plastisol processes. Approved for use in food-contact applications, ORL-P is also suitable for transparent applications.

Its recommended level of use depends on the formulation, processing conditions and the product type.

ORH-Z is a unique and synergistic combination of ß-diketone containing a zinc metal soap. It provides the initial colour of the PVC product and ensures its colour stability. It is used in rigid, semi-rigid and flexible PVC, whereas it is also suitable for transparent applications.

Its recommended level of use depends on the formulation, processing conditions and the product type.

ORC-A is an organic co-stabilizer for PVC applications. While ensuring both the initial color stability and thermal stability in Ca-Zn based stabilizers, ORC-A is particularly used to stabilize PVC resin in rigid non-food applications.

Its recommended level of use depends on the formulation, processing conditions and the product type.

ORZ-A is an organic co-stabilizer used in PVC applications. It exhibits synergic effects when used together with Calcium-Zinc stabilizers.

It is a product known for its role in stabilizing halogenated polymers and in particular chlorinated polymers like polyvinyl chloride.

Akstab® ORZ-A is a rare compound that develops both colour and long colour-resistance and thermal stability in Calcium-Zinc-based stabilizers throughout the life of PVC products and during processing in the PVC stabilizer industry.

It exhibits a rheological effect based on dosage. Additional lubricant may be necessary to compensate this.

Hydrotalcites

Hydrotalcite is a white mineral having a layered structure found in nature with a general chemical formula of Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3.4H2O. PVC is decomposed during processing from heat and the shear stress effects and is decomposed by the effect of UV rays while it is in final product form, resulting in the Cl in its structure being released. Cl, which is released into the medium in the form of an HCl gas, may cause the PVC first to turn yellow and then to burn out. The most important functions expected out of the stabilizers is to chemically react with the HCl which has been released.

Hydrotalcites are very effective in PVC stabilization because they are very good acid scavengers due to their exceptional anion-exchange properties. Hydrotalcites have greatly enhanced the performance of Ca/Zn-based stabilizer systems, due to their features of environmentally friendliness and non-toxicity. They particularly have a major share in the development of stabilizers used in the production of rigid PVC window profiles and flexible PVC automotive cables with high service temperatures. At Akdeniz Chemson, we have 2 types of hydrotalcite products.

AS-01 is a synthetic hydrotalcite based on Magnesium and Aluminium and developed as an acid scavenger in PVC applications. It is primarily used as an acid scavenger in the polymer industry (e.g., PVC, PE, PS) contributing to the improvement and the protection of the properties of polymeric materials. Hydrotalcite is also used as an antacid to neutralize the gastric acid in the pharmaceutical industry, in addition to its usage in many applications.

AS-04 is a synthetic hydrotalcite with a double-layered hydroxide structure based on Magnesium, Zinc and Aluminium. It contains charge balancing anions in its interlayers and is especially developed for use in cable and window profile applications.
